Beginning Quilling
Cheryl Stavrianeas
Saturday, May 23rd, 10 a.m. – Noon
Member: $18 Non-member: $23
Registration Deadline: May 18th

Paper quilling is, simply, the art of rolling paper into designs, shapes, or pictures. Quilling, or paper filigree, was believed to have started in the 16th or 17th centuries. During this period, it was common for nuns to decorate religious pictures with quilled borders and shapes. During the 18th century, quilling moved from its religious beginnings, to the wealthy or noble families, as the wealthy were the only ones who had the time to dedicate to this craft. In addition, the cost of paper was extremely high and only the wealthy would be able to afford it. Paper quilling continued through the end of the Victorian era.

Quilling has become quite popular in the 21st century. This is due, in part, to the popularity of paper arts and crafts. Scrapbook and card making have revitalized the interest in paper filigree.

This two-hour class will cover what quilling is, the basic techniques, and then putting those skills together to make a flower bouquet. Students leave with a piece of art, and enough knowledge to continue quilling on their own. No experience is necessary and the instructor provides materials. Additional kits will be available for sale.
